Choosing the Right Hosting Plan for Your Business

All web hosting plans have different features and offer varying levels of resources. To select the right plan for your business, it’s important to understand your options. The following is an examination of three key types of hosting plans.

Shared Hosting: As the name suggests, Shared Hosting is a number of hosting accounts all located on one server. Some of them will share the same IP address, though a dedicated IP address is often available for an additional fee. These plans come with specific feature sets and have certain resource limits. If you’re not sure what your resource consumption needs will be, it is absolutely okay to start with a more limited plan and upgrade later, after your site has grown and garnered more traffic. Just be sure that the plan you select offers the features your site requires. Some things to consider: disk space, bandwidth, number of hosted domains, versions of PHP. Will you need a dedicated IP address? Will you need MySQL databases? Will you want to allow multiple FTP users or need to create multiple email addresses? Specifications will vary from one Shared Hosting plan to another.

VPS Hosting: VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. This refers to the partitioning of a physical server into multiple servers where each one acts like a Dedicated Server. Each partition has its own operating system and can be rebooted separately. These operating systems receive a specific share of the resources of the physical server, and they’re isolated from each other. If one VPS experiences problems, it has no effect on the others. There are many advantages to selecting VPS. VPS costs less than a fully Dedicated Server yet provides a great deal more freedom and flexibility than Shared Hosting. If you feel you don’t have the technical expertise to manage your own VPS, don’t let that stop you. Many hosting companies will manage your VPS for you, for an additional fee. With this option, you won’t have root access, but you’ll have more decision-making power than you’d get with Shared Hosting.

Dedicated Servers: A Dedicated Server is the most powerful option and is suitable for the most demanding websites. One major advantage of going with a Dedicated Server plan is the ability to upgrade certain features. If you outgrow your server, it may not be necessary to move to a new server. With Shared Hosting, you’d have to upgrade to a higher-tier plan because you can’t buy additional features. With a Dedicated Server, you’re not limited in that way and can buy all the bandwidth you need. As with VPS Hosting, if you feel you don’t have the technical expertise to manage your own server, full management is often an option with Dedicated Server plans.

With thousands of web hosts competing in the marketplace and making offers of unlimited bandwidth or disk space, a new or less experienced webmaster may be tempted to go with the lowest-priced hosting option available. The lowest-priced plan may result in problems, though: slow page loading, downtime, and generally poor performance. Cheap hosting plans often come with unreliable tech support, and the hosting companies may be using inferior hardware or overloading their servers with too many accounts. To best support the needs of your business, we recommend you examine all available options and choose a reputable, well-established company to host your websites.
